Please Shovel Your Hydrant!
When clearing snow on your property, please remember to remove the snow from around the fire hydrants as well. A hydrant in your neighbor’s yard is there to protect your family and your home too.
Why It Matters:
- Buried hydrants delay access to the water supply needed to fight fires.
- In an emergency, every second counts!
- Snow-covered hydrants can be difficult to find.
- Time spent searching and digging could mean the difference in saving a home!
How Much to Clear: According to NFPA 1 Fire Code, fire hydrants need:
- 3 feet of clear space around the entire hydrant
- 5 feet of clear space in front of the hydrant connections
You Can Help: By taking a few extra minutes to clear the hydrants near your home after each snowfall, you’re helping protect not just your own property, but your entire neighborhood. Please work with your neighbors to keep hydrants accessible.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe this winter!
