The Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary was formed in 1945, one year after the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company was incorporated. Its missions include but are not limited to:
- Providing assistance to the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company as requested by the Fire Company and District Officers.
- Providing support to the Fire Company and their families during times of need.
- Providing assistance to the Simsbury community during disasters and special need situations.
- Supporting local or fire related charitable causes.
- Encouraging volunteer spirit throughout the community.
In addition to bringing much needed fluids and food supplies to firefighters working at a fire or accident scene, the Auxiliary provides food and drink at planned events such as Fire Company drills, Fire District Open House, memorial events and the participants of Simsbury’s Torchlight Parade, to name a handful. The Auxiliary meets once a month to plan events.
The SVFCLA and the SVFC partner to raise money at their annual golf tournament. The funds raised allow the Auxiliary to help support the Connecticut Burn Camp, a favorite charity enabling children who have suffered burns to have a week-long camping experience without feeling self-conscious.
These funds also support the Auxiliaries’ Bowman-Kerr scholarship, awarded yearly to a Simsbury applicant who volunteers in the community, whose family volunteers in the fire/EMS/police service and/or who is dedicated to a career helping others in fire, police, EMS or related fields.
The Auxiliary donates to a variety of charities and supports Fire Company and Auxiliary members in their own time of need.
The Auxiliary also partners with Simsbury Social Services during times of community need or disaster. During the devastating October 2011 snowstorm that cut electricity to the town, Auxiliary members spent seven days at the high school shelter where they prepared food to feed over 600 people three meals a day. They kept the coffee supply hot and available all day for anyone who visited the shelter. Many of these volunteers slept on cots in the firehouses themselves and also assisted families of fire fighters and auxiliary sheltering there.
