HazMat 33

HazMat 33 consists of a tow vehicle and trailer. The 2006 Ford F-550 XL Super Duty chassis features a turbo diesel V-8 engine, four-wheel drive, five-man cab and an Omaha Standard service body for storage. For small volume spill control this unit carries Speedy Dry and sand for covering fluids on hard surfaces, containment pools to catch fluid leaks, catch basin covers to prevent fluids from entering storm drains, absorbent pads and other materials.

The twenty-four foot TN trailer is equipped with a Onan 6500 watt generator which powers internal lighting, heat and air conditioning. Some of the equipment carried on this trailer includes Level A and Level B hazmat suits and other associated protective clothing, full decontamination station with hot water shower, detectors and test kits for substances such as radiation, nerve agents, mercury, and other various chemicals, over-pack drums and drum repair kit, and a portable weather station and hand-held anemometers.

HazMat 33 was received through the Capitol Region Council of Governments from a grant by the Department of Homeland Security. Several participating towns comprise the Capitol Region Hazmat Response Team and HazMat 33 is one of four units which CRCOG received. While HazMat 33 must always be ready to respond regionally it will be frequently utilized locally, much to the benefit of Simsbury.
